Adventure Awaits: How Getting Outside Can Boost Your Bond with Your Kids

As parents, we try to do all we can to make sure that we have time with our kids. Usually quantity is not an issue when you share a roof with those kids for 18 or so years. But did you know that by simply spending that time outside, you can greatly improve the quality of time with your kids?

A study published in the  International Association of Applied Psychology found that walking together in nature can improve the relationships between parents and kids. This study looked at mothers and daughters (ages 10-12) and gauged their interactions with indoor activities and outdoor activities. Conversations were more positive when in an outdoor setting and overall influence over each other’s conversations had less negativity. We all want positive relationships with our kids, so here are three ways you can spend time with your daughters (or sons) outside:

1

Take A Hike

Going for a hike is a fantastic way to get some fresh air, exercise, and quality time with your daughter. Whether you live near the mountains or the coast, there are countless hiking trails and walking paths to explore. You can pack a picnic lunch, bring a camera, and make a day of it. Doing this will not only strengthen your relationship but will create a mutual love for the outdoors.

2

Try A New Sport

Trying a new sport together is a fun and exciting way to bond with your daughter. Whether it’s something you’ve both done before or something completely new, the experience of learning and trying something together can be very rewarding. You could try kayaking, golf or even stand up paddle boarding. Not only will you get some exercise and fresh air, but you’ll also create positive memories that will last a lifetime.

3

Explore A New City

Exploring a new city or town together is a great way to spend quality time with your daughter and create new memories. You can visit local attractions, try new restaurants, and shop at local boutiques and markets. This is also a great opportunity to learn about history and culture, and to broaden your daughter’s horizons. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even plan a weekend trip to a nearby city or town.

Spending time outside with your kids is a wonderful way to strengthen your bond and create positive memories. Whether you go for a hike, try a new sport, or explore a new city, the key is to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. So why not plan a day out together soon? You’ll both be glad you did.
